The new Jason Mraz song, “I Won’t Give Up,” came out last week. I have to let you in a secret, I am a Jason fanatic. Okay, maybe not one of those crazed fans that would chase after him or send him love letters every day, but I am one of those people who might drop dead if I ever met him in person. Basically, I love him whole heartedly. I have every one of his CDs and am keep myself updated on his tour schedule. I’ve only missed one concert tour and it about killed me.
When I was younger, I would put in “Waiting for my Rocket to Come” and listen on repeat to the CD over and over and over. I would scour the internet for different versions of songs and new songs. I found an iPod once at school and before turning it in, I looked to see if they had any Jason Mraz. They did. And they had a song that I hadn’t found yet. I seriously considered finding the owner of the iPod myself and asking him to marry me on the spot.
The new song is beautiful. Truly pure beauty.
When people ask me what I like about Jason it always comes down to a few things.
1. He was trained as a singer, not at playing guitar. So he decided he wanted to perform and learned the other instruments. Not that I’m a music snob in any way, I really am not, but I just love his voice. And I can sing along with it. He even breaks into opera occasionally which is just amazing.
2. He has funny, creative, clever lyrics. On his second CD he refers to the “Wordplay” and that is really what it is all about. I feel like every time I listen to his music I catch another reference to something I hadn’t heard before. It’s like as I grow in my education, the songs become deeper and thicker with meaning. I cannot tell you how many times I have re listened to a song that I had heard hundreds of times before only to realize that he is talking about something I recently read or learned.
3. He seems like a really decent guy. He songs are truthful. They are honest. He knows that he isn’t perfect. He knows that he is a little goofy. But he is trying his best. And he can laugh at himself. Love comes and goes for him. But he knows that one day he will love someone fully. And he is okay with waiting to find that right person. He cares about the world and the earth. It seems like, despite every thing he has accomplished, he is still the same Jason I knew in middle school.
If you haven’t heard of Jason yet, look him up. It’ll be worth your time. He has something for everyone. He has something for you.
Falling back in love,
