Waiting for Godot–Parody–

Long silence, both are walking around the stage, looking around at nothing in particular.

Vladimir: (Looking down at the mound) Look at this, a snail.
Estragon: (Walking over and also looking down) Where is it going?
Vladimir: Looking for food.
Estragon: Looking for shelter.
Vladimir: Looking for another.
Estragon: Looking for shelter.

Another silence, as they watch the snail move slowing.Vladimir: It’s a green color.
Estragon: Brown.
Vladimir: Yellow.
Estragon: Brown.

(Pause)Vladimir: (Standing up and turning away from the snail, looking out across the audience) Remember when we used to go up to the Eiffel Tower?
Estragon: No.
Vladimir: They wouldn’t let us go up now.
Estragon: It’s looking for shelter.
Vladimir: Remember when how we used to be?
Estragon: We’ve lost our rights?
Vladimir: (Distinctly) We got rid of them.
Estragon: (Standing up) Let’s go.
Vladimir: (Turning to face Estragon) We can’t.
Estragon: Why not?
Vladimir: We’re waiting for Godot.
Estragon: (despairingly) Ah! (Pause, looks back at mound) The snail’s gone.
Vladimir: (looking back at empty mound) It found its food.
Estragon: It found its shelter.
Vladimir: It found its other.
Estragon: It found its shelter.
Vladimir: It left.

Estragon Stands up from mound. Looks around. Sees nothing different from before. Lays down on ground looking up at clouds, arms and legs spread out.

Estragon:  The clouds are gray.
Vladimir: (Sits on mound and looks up, mouth opens) Remember when we used to lay in the parks and look at the white clouds?
Estragon: No.
Vladimir: (Pointing at the sky) That one looks like a tree.
Estragon: Our tree doesn’t have leaves.
Vladimir: This is good, it makes the time pass.
Estragon: We could go look for the snail.
Vladimir: We can’t.
Estragon: Why not?
Vladimir: We’re waiting for Godot.
Estragon: (Despairingly) Ah.
Vladimir: (Pointing at the sky again) That one looks like a snail.
Estragon: The snail left.
Vladimir: (Pointing at another) That one looks like the Eiffel Tower. Remember when we used to go up to the top? We were so close to the clouds then.
Estragon: They look the same from here.
Vladimir: They were bigger. (reaching up as if to grab one) Almost like you could touch them.
Estragon: They look the same from here.
Vladimir: (Holding hands together and tipping head on to them, like he is sleeping) They looked like soft pillows.

(Silence as they both look up at the sky)

Vladimir: It might rain.
Estragon: Maybe.
Vladimir: We don’t have anything to cover us from the rain.

Another silence as they look at the sky. Estragon falls asleep and begins to snore. Vladimir gets up from mound and walks around looking around for something to do. Looks down at Estragon and nudges him with his boot gently. Estragon changes position, edging away from Vladimir. Vladimir nudges him again. This time, Estragon wakes up.

Estragon: (Rubbing his eyes, mumbles) I was asleep.
Vladimir: (Looking down at Estragon) I know. I was lonely.
Estragon: I had a dream.
Vladimir: (Covering ears, turning away from Estragon and taking a few steps) Don’t tell me.
Estragon: Did I sleep long?
Vladimir: (Turning back) No. I was lonely.
Estragon: Let’s go.
Vladimir: We can’t.
Estragon: Why not?
Vladimir: We’re waiting for Godot.
Estragon: (Despairingly) Ah. (Pause) Why?
Vladimir: (Confidently) Because he told us to.
Estragon: (Sitting up) You met him?
Vladimir: (With less confidence) Well, no. (Then quickly) But he told us to wait here, he said he would meet us here.
Estragon: (Pointing at ground) Here?
Vladimir: (Confident again) Yes, here. (Gestures to tree) By the tree.
Estragon: Ah. When?
Vladimir: (Looking at tree) Today.
Estragon: Not yesterday?
Vladimir: No today.
Estragon: And if he doesn’t come?
Vladimir: (Looking back at Estragon) Why wouldn’t he come?
Estragon: Maybe this isn’t the right place.
Vladimir: (Gesturing towards tree again) But there’s the tree. He will come.
Estragon: But what if he doesn’t?
Vladimir: We come back tomorrow.
Estragon: And do what?
Vladimir: Whatever we can, wait.

This is another of my pieces that I found on the computer that I never would have looked at had I not been doing a favor for my brother. So WALA! here it is like magic back from 4 or 5 years ago into the present
